All of us face crisis in our lives on a regular basis. But the impact of crisis can be far different for different people. Often external circumstances are so much out of our control that we fail to manage our mental health. We get into a spiral of hopelessness, helplessness and anxiety. It starts feeling like things are never going to change. We start creating worst case scenarios in our mind. We keep on ruminating on what could go wrong. This pattern of thinking can be very overwhelming. Especially when there are external problems, there are many things which are beyond our control. So we need a lot of energy to deal with tasks which are needed to be done to get out of the crisis. But our continuous worrying might become a major obstacle in our way of dealing with the crisis. Jordan Peterson in his book 12 Rules for Life gives a technique to deal with this type of state of mind. when we are facing with a crisis, set aside some time like 30 minutes or an hour to think about that problem or to talk about that problem. Throughout the day, whenever you catch yourself worrying about it, remind yourself that you will think about it only at the assigned time. Then distract your mind to something else. Some times our mind starts feeling that the current thought is extremely important and you may forget about it if you don't think it through at that time only. If this happens, write it on a piece of paper so that you will not forget it when you think about the crisis at the assigned time. Don't keep this assigned time just before you go to sleep because thiking about the problem can activate your brain and you may find it difficult to fall asleep.
